Remember: just because a child is growing up in a slum does not make them a mere stats in the society.
Leo Buscaglia, an American author said: “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
You can help change this narrative for children living in slums, and without spending a penny, by showing tolerance, compassion, understanding, extending a helping hand, or even just by engaging with a smile or making them feel welcome.
Underprivileged children are often unsure of how their basic needs would be met. This situation is compounded by societal bias, stigmatisation, and discrimination, whether demonstrated or voiced.
5. Exemplify friendliness and warmth
Stability on the home front is vital to a child’s development – and a gainfully employed parent is at the centre of it. Curate employment and empowerment opportunities for their parents and see how it would rub off on the children! A child whose parents can provide basic life needs would be happier in society.
4. Empower their Parents
You can solicit funds via charity galas, special events, funfairs, junk sales, and others. A fundraising platforms like FundACause has also made it easier for you to raise and donate funds.
Fundraising is the process of soliciting and accumulating voluntarily contributed funds from people, businesses, non-profit organisations, as well as government bodies to support and execute social causes.
3. Raise funds for children in slum areas
Education is a ticket out of the slum. Support them with writing materials, uniforms, sandals, school bags, and more of such items needed in school. You can also provide scholarships to students. These will empower them with basic education enough to commence the process of maximising their potentials.
2. Sponsor their Education
Another basic need is clothing. Put your new and fairly-used children’s clothing to good use by donating them to these communities. You can also rally round to get supermarkets, clothing factories and others to also donate stocked or overstocked items instead of trashing them.
The daily struggle for what to eat is real. Many children get only a meal a day and end up with severe malnutrition. Donate funds to proven charities or join forces with friends to provide them with food.
1. Provide their Basic Needs
For everyone with a good heart to support children in slum communities, here are a few options to explore:
Of particular importance is the plight of the children in these slums whose numbers keep growing. To make matters worse, growing up in these locales often subjects the children to all manner of abuse.
Overpopulated and littered with sub-standard buildings, slums lack basic amenities like power, portable water, drainage systems, schools, health centres, and recreational facilities. While governments, charitable organisations and well-meaning individuals attempt to address the needs of slum residents, there’s yet more to be done.
Nigeria holds the unfortunate record of the highest number of out-of-school children in the world! The National Bureau of Statistics, in 2019, affirmed that 82.9 million Nigerians lived in abject poverty, and according to United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), 18.5 million of them were out of school. The implications of these statistics play out every day in our society, with the increasing number of slum residents in our cities.
